Hi, I'm Alessandro Marangelli '24 a freshman from the South of Italy. I grew up in Rome with my four siblings and I attended Liceo Artistico Caravillani before passing the selections for UWC. At UWC Costa Rica I finished my last two years of high school and learnt English and Spanish at an academic level. At UWC Costa Rica I learned about new cultures and how to respect them, perspectives about the world, and how to deconstruct our biases. This was achieved through the IB diploma but mostly thanks to his peers coming from 80 different countries.

Grace Vensel

Projects

Grace Vensel '21 is double majoring in Global Studies and Francophone Studies, as well as minoring in History. She is particularly interested in the historical construction of imperialism and how it is manifested today. Grace is additionally interested in resistance to systems of power. Her experiences studying abroad in Bordeaux, France, as well as traveling to Dakar, Senegal with Dr. Eloise Brezault drove her desire to research the CFA franc in Senegal.

Derek Sherrange

Derek Sherrange is a junior majoring in Global Studies and International Economics-Multilanguage (Spanish and Swahili). Their research interests are in food sovereignty, decolonial studies, human rights policy, and socio-legal studies. Derek is critical of the lack of recognition by settler-states of the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples that they reside on today. More specifically, they want to acknowledge the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee people that their home and their educational institution sits on.
