Outdoor Studies

Krish Gupta is a Class of 2028 student from Kathmandu, Nepal. He is pursuing a major in Computer Science with a minor in Outdoor Leadership. He is an alumnus of United World Colleges (UWC) ISAK Japan. At St. Lawrence, he is the manager of the Munro Family Rock Climbing Wall, he is a Community Assistant for the Residence Life office, and a guide for the Outdoor Program. He is passionate about computer science, music, and outdoor recreation activities like rock climbing, archery, hiking, camping, and swimming. 

Sofie Schimmelpenninck '28 from Lewiston, NY, is a Conservation Biology major at St. Lawrence University with minors in Outdoor Leadership and Political Science. She also completed a six-week field semester with the University of Montana's Wild Rockies Field Institute, where she studied large-landscape conservation. Her academic and professional interests include environmental science and policy, sustainable food systems, agriculture, and outdoor education.

Evie Hopper ’29 is an Environmental Studies and Math major, with a minor in Outdoor Leadership. On campus she is involved with Thelmo, the Upbeats, Club Nordic Skiing, and works as an Admissions Ambassador. She is deeply interested in food systems, and more specifically how local food can be the answer to food insecurity issues experienced across the world.

Rachel Pelletier is a senior at St. Lawrence University majoring in Environmental Studies with minors in Public Health and Outdoor Leadership. Rachel is interested in learning about sustainable living, community conservation efforts, and how the health of the environment intersects with the health of individuals and communities. On campus, Rachel is involved in the Campus Kitchens Project, a club focusing on reducing food insecurity in the surrounding Canton community by providing weekly hot meals to community members and snack packs to the local primary schools.

Ella Pecor '27 is an Environmental Studies and Political Science double major, with minors in African Studies and Outdoor Leadership. 

Greetings! I am Hannah McMillan, class of 2027! I am pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on agroecology. I have been working on small vegetable farms every summer for the past 4 years, giving me a foundation of agrarian knowledge and experience to keep building on. 

Hi! My name is Hannah and I am a senior at St. Lawrence University. While I am majoring in psychology, my time at slu has been spent exploring a wide range of departments, living spaces, and places in the world. I gravitate towards experiential learning and connection to community, as I am an alum of the Adirondack Semester and Kenya Semester Program. I am also an outdoor program guide, as well as the booking manager for Java Barn Music. In the future, I hope to expand my knowledge of psychology and working with communities through a master's in expressive arts therapy!

Hi! My name is Bryn, and I’m from Boulder, Colorado. I’m currently studying Environmental Studies and Sociology, with an interest in learning about the relationship between people and the environments that surround them. On campus, I’m an Outdoor Program guide and work at the climbing wall, where I love meeting new people while exploring the Adirondacks and beyond.

Molly Rodewald '28 is an Environmental Studies and Biology combined major at St. Lawrence. 

Berit Brecke '26 is an Environmental-Geology major and has been involved on campus with the L.I.G.H.T house, Varsity Volleyball, and the climbing wall staff. Notable moments in her undergraduate studies include participating in the Adirondack Semester and the Kenya Signature Program, experiences that strengthened her interest in connecting with people from different backgrounds. 

Hey! I am currently a senior at St. Lawrence University, majoring in Environmental Studies with minors in Asian Studies and Outdoor Leadership. I am passionate about sustainable agriculture, specifically regarding increasing accessibility of local produce in aims to combat food sovereignty. Food, specifically, connects everyone in so many unique ways. It is vital to understand how our food is grown to reintroduce a deeper connection with the food that we consume. I am able to pursue this passion of mine through living in the Greenhouse Theme community at St. Lawrence.

Lars Fattinger '28 is a double major in Geology and Biology with a minor in Outdoor Leadership. They are fascinated by the field of paleoclimatology - analyzing geological records to better understand past environmental conditions and the forces shaping our planet today. Specifically, they are interested in pursuing research related to tree rings, ice cores, and glacial terrains to interpret past climates.

Michael (Cooper) Anderson is a Computer Science major and Outdoor Studies minor at St. Lawrence University. As a St. Lawrence University Fellow, he has developed deep learning models for audio classification using TensorFlow and PyTorch. Cooper is also an experienced Teaching Assistant, helping students with programming languages and fundamental CS concepts. His leadership roles include serving as Treasurer for the St. Lawrence Outing Club and as a Wilderness EMT/guide for the Outing Program, managing outdoor excursions and providing emergency medical care.

My name is Maggie Layman, and I am from West Chester, Pennsylvania. I am in the Class of 2026 at St. Lawrence University, where I am majoring in Conservation Biology, minoring in Statistics and Outdoor Studies, and play for the Varsity Volleyball Team. I am passionate about conservation and ecology and plan to pursue a research-based career dedicated to studying and preserving systems involving wildlife, aquatic habitats, or forests. When I’m not studying the natural world, you will likely still find me outside walking, hiking, biking, and more.

Hello! My name is Sam and I am currently a senior at St. Lawrence University. I am majoring in Environmental Studies and minoring in Film and Outdoor Studies. At SLU, I live in the Greenhouse surrounded by people who are passionate about fixing our food system and cooking good food. I am from Cornville, Maine, and my passions include fly fishing, canoeing, wood working, and agriculture!

I am currently a junior at St Lawrence University studying creative writing and psychology. On campus I am coordinator and founder of our wellness program's SLU Flow Project, which engages students in functional movement to build community and practical nervous system regulation skills. I am also a member of the Lighthouse, which is a theme house living community dedicated to providing mental wellness resources to our campus (and the greater St Lawrence area).

Abigail Lateer '24 is an English-Environmental Studies major interested in the power of food sovereignty to help disadvantaged communities, what it means to live sustainably, and the hybrid forms of literary journalism and creative nonfiction. She is looking to further the skills she developed in this internship by becoming certified in permaculture design!

Sage Lalor (she/her) is a St. Lawrence University student who is designing her own multi-field major called Equity Studies. She took part in the Adirondack Semester Program during the fall of 2021 and is currently studying abroad in Denmark. When on campus, she guides outdoor trips in the Adirondack Park, creates space for non-violent communication workshops, and does yoga and meditation with the Light House. When not in school she spends her time reading, journalling, playing outside, and dancing with friends. 

Audrey Bowman '24 is a Geology major and is interested in a Physics and/or Outdoor Studies minor. Her areas of pursued expertise are glaciology, oceanography, and climatology. She hopes to study abroad in New Zealand at the University of Otago where she will take advanced classes in her areas of interest. Her passion for research will lead her to conduct research either at the University of Otago or through an internship. Her love for the outdoors leads her striving for proficiency in mountaineering skills and the chance to complete research in remote parts of the world.

Caroline Starace (she/her) is a senior at St. Lawrence University graduating in Fall 22 from Saratoga Springs, New York.  She is a Geology major and an Outdoor Studies minor. Caroline has plans to pursue a master's degree in Geology and is interested in structural geology and science communication. During her summer, Caroline studied six different landslides within the Marcy Anorthosite Massif, a geologic unit located in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Mountains.

Edward "Ned" Hallahan is in the class of 2021. He's a philosophy major who is hoping to go to pursue a P.H.D in philosophy. At SLU he's done the Adirondack Semester and studied abroad in Kenya. He's done another research project collecting oral histories of Adirondack artists. He's also worked for North Country Public Radio. Ned is interested in environmental ethics. On-campus, he lives in the Arts Annex, is the treasurer of woodcarving club, and is part of Divest SLU.
