littleGrasse Foodworks is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model where shareholders have full access to the harvest of the farm. Such a structure grants shareholders more agency over their food, and a more curated experience that promotes a strong sense of reciprocity between the self, farmers, food and land. They are the only interactive, free-choice CSA model in St. Lawrence County. This structure differs from the more common market-oriented farm businesses. littleGrasse and its shareholders are “dedicated to sharing traditional skills, holistic land stewardship, and resilient local economies” (littleGrasse Foodworks).
My experience at littleGrasse has left a lasting imprint on my life, shaping my lifestyle choices and habits. I have learned traditional skills like canning, pickling, blanching, and freezing as part of sustainable land stewardship and food preservation. In a collapsing, late-stage capitalist society, littleGrasse offers an accessible, reliable agriculture model that fosters local participation in developing such resilient, life-sustaining systems in real time. Moving forward, I aspire to apply the homesteading skills I have learned at littleGrasse to my family's garden, continue to expand on my agrarian knowledge, and, furthermore, build on my capacity to give back to my community and the land, wherever I end up.
