Semester:
Summer 2024
Description

This summer I had the opportunity to work as the Assistant Coordinator in the St Lawrence University Permaculture Garden. As the Assistant Coordinator, I had a lot of freedom in terms of what I wanted to do with the garden. This gave me the ability to maintain what was already there, as well as plan and change the layout by adding new plants and paths. A lot of the summer was spent recovering overgrown sections, weeding and mulching paths, and watering plants. Once more of the garden was under control I was able to plant new seasonal crops such as summer squash, herbs, wildflowers, tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, peas, beans, and much more. The Permaculture Garden allowed me to understand sustainable gardening and how a home garden can support the surrounding ecosystem, as well as explore farm-to-table gardening and how it can be used as a solution for food scarcity. The Permaculture Garden also allowed me to meet other farmers and gardeners in the area and learn about their experience in the agriculture industry and how they have navigated short growing seasons and large demands for organic and local produce. I am extremely grateful for this internship as well as the head garden coordinator, Kai Frantz, who I worked alongside all summer. This internship has made me feel more confident in my farming techniques as well as made me feel much closer to the North Country natural environment.
