This past summer I had the privilege to work with experienced Physicians, Physicians Assistants, and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) technologists at Adirondack Rehabilitation Medicine. The Internship Fellowship Award gave me the opportunity to focus solely on gaining hands on clinical experience, learning neuro-anatomy in depth, gaining efficiency in NCV technology, and making valuable connections with respected members of the medical community. This internship not only gave me an incredibly rare and expansive foundation for the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, but also opened many doors for my future in medicine.
Throughout this experience, I was able to observe firsthand the importance of collaboration, clinical reasoning amongst varying perspectives, and patient centered care. Not only did this summer give me a significant portion of the necessary time needed before taking the NCV certification exam, it allowed me to better understand the extensive process that must be followed when evaluating patients with complex neuromuscular conditions, as well as to appreciate the role that this diagnostic tool plays in overall patient treatment.
One of the most meaningful aspects of my internship was the overwhelming support I gained and the network of other healthcare professionals I was able to meet, allowing me to shadow physicians in a variety of specialties, learning these other fields firsthand. In particular, I was able to meet and shadow the endowed chair of Neurology at University of Vermont Medical School Dr. Hehir, which was an invaluable experience I will utilize as I make future decisions regarding my medical path.
