Sociology

Connor Shea is a Digital Media and Film student whose work blends critical analysis, creative production, and community engagement. For a summer fellowship, he analyzed 30 films—from Full Metal Jacket (1987) to The Creator (2023)—mapping shifts in war cinema from embodied soldiering to algorithmic targeting. Using critical mapping, contextual analysis, and film theory, his research explored how digital technologies reshape the visibility, intimacy, and abstraction of violence, comparing Hollywood and international perspectives.

Chantel McCarthy '25 is a Psychology Major and a Gender and Sexuality Studies/Sociology Minor. She is passionate about the intersection between individual and structural barriers that human beings face in society. This passion has led her to various academic opportunities such as a Research Assistantship where she helped with Dr. Megan Carpenter's Ovulation Study and a Summer Internship where she shadowed a Licensed Master of Social Work at a local Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Center.

My name is Kasey Wood and I am a senior at St. Lawrence University. I come from a small town in midcoast Maine and started my journey at St. Lawrence during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have always been drawn to mathematics as a subject since I was little, but was not introduced to a statistics or computer science class until I started at SLU. As soon as I took the intro courses for those departments I knew I would be a data science major, the perfect combination of math, statistics, and computer science. And I am a sociology minor. During my time here at St.

Bridget Hasting '25 is studying psychology with an education and sociology minor at SLU. Her career goals and educational aspirations include completing a  Psych-doctorate after finishing her undergrad at SLU. Her current professional goal is to work as a school psychologist or a psychologist in a mental health facility. She is not limiting herself to any age group to work with, and she also has experience working with a wide range of disabilities. 

My name is Ayesha Khatun, and I am rising senior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sociology. Within campus I am a Community Assistant and a staff of the Launder Science Library. I also a McNair Scholar, an active member of ICC, and a recipient of the Gilman Scholarship. The past couple of semesters I have had the privilege of doing animal research with rats regarding delayed discounting and social-anxiety like behavior.

 I am a Pre-law, Government major, with minors in Philosophy and Sociology. On campus I am an Admission's Ambassador, Secretary of the Thelomathesian Society, AWARE Trained Advocate, and member of Kappa Delta Sigma Sorority. Additionally, this upcoming spring I'm studying abroad Vienna, Austria. 

I am a rising junior at St Lawrence University majoring in global studies with a topical focus in environmental studies or peace studies and a geographical focus on southeast Asia. I’m pursuing minors in public health and sociology, as I hope to do social justice and non-profit work in grassroots organizing and advocacy.

Leah (Leh-ah), '24, is an international student at St. Lawrence University. Her major is Chemistry and she is also interested in sociology with the aim of pursuing medicine and research in future. During her freshman year, she did toxicology research and moved to organic synthesis research during Summer 2022. With the lab skills she gained in her freshman year, she was fully equiped for her summer research; synthesis of proflavine derivatives.
