Thanks to generous support from St. Lawrence, I was able to spend a second summer interning with the Upper Valley Nighthawks. The Nighthawks are a New England College Baseball League (NECBL) summer baseball team that celebrated their 10th summer this year. The Hawks are highly competitive and recruit Division I players from across the country to play for them in Hartford, Vermont. Many players are recruited and go on to play in the MLB. Nighthawks games are regularly attended by professional scouts and are also broadcast on ESPN. Local fan attendance is often in the several thousands.
Last summer, I worked in Broadcast and Gameday Operations, which enabled me to learn more about everything from how to run a camera to the best ways to engage fans. This summer, I was promoted to Assistant General Manager and was able to gain a much better understanding of what it takes to run a seasonal organization with so many moving parts.
As an Assistant General Manager, I had many different roles. I created and sold individual and corporate sponsorships, and solicited community sponsors who donated food, gym memberships, and served as host families. Community support is critical to the success of the Nighthawks, and I took my role as a representative very seriously. Much of this work was done before the season officially started.
