Semester:
Summer 2026
Description

Summer 2026, I got to work in the Chittenden County Public Defender's Office in the role of an investigative intern. My job was to compile all the evidence that the police got on our clients. I take notes on what the police found and summarize it to the attorneys. The reason I do this is because the attorneys are already overloaded with cases since they are public defenders. I make their lives easier by summarizing the hours of evidence and highlighting issues during the collection of evidence that they are able to use in court. To make my notes useful for the attorneys, I needed to learn police procedures and specific aspects of crimes. Vermont doesn't have a lot of crazy crimes and since I was an intern, I was not able to work felonies. This means that I got really familiar with DUIs and violating restraining orders.

During this internship I got to work on learning the law and legal procedures. One of the responsibilities I had was to conduct intakes, through this I got to practice my people skills. A smaller task I worked on was efficiently relaying information, either reporting the issues in the evidence found by police or reporting on what happened in trial that day to those who were not there.
