Summer 2024
Description

Emotional labor can influence multiple levels of our mental health, from depression and anxiety to quality of life and how individuals cope with stressors in life. This summer I studied the effects of mindfulness-based resilience training (MBRT) on the emotional labor of individuals in the general public. The type of mindfulness that I focused on involved self-regulation and learning to have a separation between an individual's self and their experiences (i.e., emotions during events). Studies looking into MBRT have found that it may allow individuals to deal with stressors more effectively, decreasing their reaction to stressors (i.e., awareness of emotional triggers and maintaining control). In my study, I used podcasts to deliver six weeks of MBRT sessions to my participants. Those in the experimental group listened to a mindfulness podcast, while those in the control group listened to a scientific podcast. Researchers doing similar studies have found that podcasts are both highly accessible and an effective medium for individuals to receive MBRT, regardless of their location or schedule. After the training, overall participants had significant decreases in their emotional labor and improved quality of life. One surprising finding was that all participants, both in the experimental and control groups improved in their overall wellbeing. Along with learning ways that I can improve my study for future work, I gained valuable insight on how to run a research project on my own and how to effectively communicate with participants when you are not able to speak with them in person. In the future I hope to rerun this study focusing specifically on the emergency medial service community, with hopes to find a significant impact on their levels of emotional labor.
