Located in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Green Mountain Farm to School works to connect farms, schools, and communities through strengthening local food systems. They have three main programs, including The Lunchbox, the Farm Direct Food Hub, and Farm-to-School.
During my internship, I worked predominantly on The Lunchbox and Farm-to-School programs. The Lunchbox Program provides free meals to kids 18 and under through the USDA's Summer Meal Program three times a week. In addition to free meals, the Lunchbox also provides free local produce to visitors at the Market Basket table and provides fun, educational activities for kids.
Each week, I worked in school gardens cultivated by the Farm-to-School team to maintain crops and glean produce for the Market Basket table. I also planned and executed the educational activities at The Lunchbox. While not at The Lunchbox, I refined my communication skills by creating weekly social media posts, writing weekly newsletters, and writing press releases to update the community about GMFTS events and projects.
