The precarious living conditions faced by various communities around the world lead to numerous health challenges, particularly impacting the most vulnerable groups. With a spirit full of zeal to contribute to positive change and strive for a better future filled with hope for these communities and beyond, I decided to return to my hometown, Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to undertake my internship.
My time at Asili/Eastern Congo Initiative was a transformative experience, rich with discovery and growth. Asili, an international NGO based in my hometown, works to enhance access to quality healthcare for communities in remote areas. It also provides access to clean water to these communities.
During my internship, I took on responsibilities such as medication delivery to clinics, community engagement, inventory management, and participation in preschool and prenatal consultations. These tasks gave me valuable insight into professional life, revealing its many facets, challenges, and obstacles while allowing me to bridge theoretical knowledge with the practical realities of my community, which are often delicately contrasted. Moreover, this experience enabled me to rediscover my home and appreciate the many perspectives it offers, as well as to understand the progress made in health improvement initiatives and what still needs to be done.
Consequently, my internship experience at the Asili/Eastern Congo Initiative has been enriching, marked by significant learning. I gained deeper insights into the local communities and the challenges they face. I was also inspired by the various positive actions for change, aligning with my own passions and professional aspirations.
