This summer, I interned with Westchester County Executive Kenneth Jenkins, an experience that gave me a closer look at how local government works and the many ways it impacts people’s lives.
One of the most meaningful parts of my internship was leading Park and Read, a program that brought local politicians into parks to read with kids, many from underserved communities. It was a great way to combine literacy, community, and civic engagement in a fun setting.
I also had the chance to visit different county facilities alongside the other interns, including the Waste Management Facility, the Material Recovery Facility, and several of Westchester’s parks within the Park and Read program. These visits helped me see just how many services the county provides on a daily basis.
Overall, the internship pushed me to grow, especially in communication, research, and public speaking—and gave me an inside perspective on local government.
