Semester:
Summer 2024
Description

This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern at littleGrasse Foodworks, an organic community-sanctioned agriculture (CSA) farm in Canton, NY. During my internship I was able to deeply engage with sustainable, small-scale agriculture, and the community that surrounds it.

I became skilled in essential farming techniques such as direct seeding, transplanting crops, and crop rotations, learning how to maintain soil health and organically combat pests and diseases. I gained proficiency in water bath and pressure canning, blanching, and freezing as methods to store seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Additionally, I practiced eating a seasonal diet, cooking with freshly harvested ingredients from the farm which I served to my fellow residents multiple times a week, and shared with my community during monthly potlucks.

Through the simple acts of nurturing the land, tending to the animals, and sharing meals and conversations with my community, I developed a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of communal living and the lifestyle that comes along with homesteading. The relationships I built with fellow farmers, WWOOFers, and community members enriched my understanding of the broader impacts of sustainable living, and the importance of community-sustained agriculture.
