This summer, I set out to write seven short stories based off the seven deadly sins through a feminist lens, entitled: Feminist Tales of Mortal Sins. Through these stories I wanted to highlight the different types of violence young girls and women face due to being victims of the patriarchal, capitalistic system more disproportionately than men, who are often the perpetrators. To achieve my goal, I educated myself on the history of the seven deadly sins, other adaptations that depict them, and read a variety of short stories to understand my craft better. I was able to hone my skills as a writer by experimenting with my prose through different line structure, length, and omniscient point of view to convey my message to my readers. This experience has made me a better writer as I learned time management, met deadlines, line edited, and learned what day-to-day process works for me to create effective stories. I’ve learned what type of writer I am, and areas I need to improve. Overall, this experience has shaped my work ethic and how I go about writing stories that tackle difficult, often sensitive issues that women face that people need to be exposed to. I now use these skills to further my craft and articulate heavy themes that matter to me as a young woman.
