As the Cotuit Kettleers videographer intern this summer, I had the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, professional like sports environment and gain firsthand experience in the world of sports media. The Cape Cod Baseball League is the premier collegiate summer baseball leagues in the country, attracting the best college baseball players and future major leaguers from division one schools across the country. Being part of an organization with that level of talent and visibility pushed me to hold myself to a high professional standard and taught me how important it is to consistently produce quality work, even when working under tight deadlines and changing circumstances.
Throughout the season, I worked alongside a team of interns while managing multiple responsibilities at once. My primary responsibility was capturing video of the team and turning that footage into content that could be used to promote the Kettleers, their players and the organization on social media platforms. This included creating highlight packages, social media content, player promotions, marketing materials and other video projects throughout the season. I had to learn how to quickly identify compelling moments, capture them and then turn around polished content on a short timeline. Working in this environment significantly improved both my technical skills and my ability to manage my time and prioritize projects.
This summer internship helped me answer important questions about my future career. Before this experience, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in sports media and marketing, but I was still trying to determine what areas of the industry interested me most. Working with the Kettleers confirmed that I enjoy the creative and storytelling side of sports media, particularly creating video content that helps teams build their brand and connect with their audiences. I also learned that I enjoy the fast-paced nature of working in sports.
Upon returning for my senior year at St. Lawrence, I plan to continue building my portfolio and gaining as much professional experience in sports media as possible. My next steps are to continue developing my skills in videography, editing, storytelling and sports marketing while pursuing future opportunities with collegiate, professional, or other sports organizations.
I am extremely grateful to have received the support that made this experience possible. This opportunity allowed me to spend a summer doing work that directly relates to my career goals while learning from professionals and experiencing the realities of working in sports media. Without the fellowship support, an opportunity like this would have been much more difficult to pursue. The experience was not only valuable professionally but also personally, as it challenged me to grow, become more independent and take another step toward the career I hope to build. I am incredibly thankful to the donors who helped make this experience possible and gave me the opportunity to learn, create, and grow through my time with the Cotuit Kettleers.
