During the summer of 2026, I had the extraordinary opportunity to live and work at Days End Farm Horse Rescue, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1989. DEFHR accepts neglected and abused horses from law enforcement and works to rehabilitate them so that they can eventually be adopted. In addition, DEFHR helps to educate the public about equine welfare.
Throughout my internship, I expanded my knowledge of equine husbandry and psychology, along with significantly strengthening my horse-handling skills. I gained hands-on experience identifying and treating a variety of medical conditions. Similarly, I assisted with the rehabilitation, monitoring, and care of critical care horses, including conducting overnight checks.
I also had the opportunity to assist with and observe a variety of veterinary, farrier, and dental appointments. My daily responsibilities included maintaining barn cleanliness, as well as preparing and distributing individualized feed based on each horse's specific nutritional needs.
Over the summer, I participated in instructional sessions with DEFHR's head and assistant trainers, as well as the Equine Programs Director. These lessons further developed my understanding of equine training, rehabilitation, and what goes into running a horse rescue. I completed tour training, which allowed me to interact with visitors and help contribute to DEFHR's mission of education outreach.
Working alongside DEFHR's dedicated staff and volunteers everyday was one of the most rewarding parts of my internship. Their knowledge, compassion, and commitment to the horses is truly inspirational. This internship not only strengthened my skills and understanding of equine care but gave me an appreciation for the effort required to rehabilitate rescued horses and help to provide them with a safe and secure future.
