Summer 2025
Description

During the Summer of 2025, I had the opportunity to live, work, and learn about Birdsfoot Farm. Birdsfoot Farm is an intentional community centered around local agriculture. One of Birdsfoot's values is living as sustainable as possible. Some examples of this being off-grid housing, composting toilets, and sharing communal foods and goods.

The farm itself is community supported agriculture (CSA) and ran by the lovely farmer Dulli. Dulli has single handedly run the farm throughout the past few decades, having new, different, and sometimes the same interns every summer. Birdsfoot Farm sells produce to its CSA members, the Canton Farmers Market on Tuesday and Friday mornings, as well as locally owned grocery stores. Throughout the summer, I spent the days working closely with Dulli, her farm hand Sam, and my good friend Mathilda, who was the other summer intern.

My work consisted of bed prepping, seed planting, transplanting, weeding, irrigation, cover cropping, and harvesting. My favorite days of the week were Mondays and Thursdays, known at Birdsfoot as harvest days. It was inspiring and encouraging to see how the harvest changed throughout the summer; such as peas being abundant throughout July, the first tomato of August, the crisp bite of mixed greens throughout the summer, the first beet accidentally pulled from the ground.

Having the opportunity to not just work at Birdsfoot, but also be viewed as a member of this deeply intertwined community, was a beautiful experience. I hope to continue having the same grace, understanding, and compassion that I have learned at Birdsfoot throughout my future walks of life.
