This summer, I was offered a marketing internship at Height of Land Publications in Jeffersonville, VT. With Business Studies being a big part of my SLU experience, I thought an internship in the marketing field would add another level of experience and knowledge to my studies that I wouldn’t have otherwise found in the classroom.
I was attracted to this marketing internship because of its proximity to my hometown and renowned team culture. I also value how it combines my love for outdoor sports with authentic, high-quality storytelling through print. Height of Land owns four titles: Backcountry Magazine, Mountain Flyer Magazine, Alpinist Magazine, and Cross-Country Skier Magazine. Every year, Mountain Flyer puts on a mountain bike festival called Flow State to benefit Ascutney Trails Association in Brownsville, VT.
In mid-May, I began my hybrid internship and started taking over the management of the Flow State Mountain Bike Festival social media pages, and eventually was running their marketing efforts as well. I was creating campaigns, ads, and copy daily to promote the festival. I gained experience collaborating with sponsors, vendors, and returning participants to create content for our social media pages. Along with Flow State social media management, I was able to be a part of the event team and work alongside the Mountain Flyer design staff to develop festival merchandise and designs. This exposure to working with a team not only built up my confidence in the workplace, but it also taught me the importance of my voice and the impact I can have on a big project.
