Support
With the generous support from St. Lawrence University's Center for Career Excellence, I was able to spend my summer interning at Birdsfoot Farm right here in Canton, NY. Birdsfoot Farm is an intentional, consensus-based community of a handful of individuals, all of whom are devoted to living a materially simple life. Under the direction of their farmer, Dulli, I spent each work day in the field learning the practices of low-till organic farming. With June being the primary planting month in the North Country, we started the summer off busy preparing beds for planting and making sure everything got in the ground. As the summer progressed, my work shifted towards weeding, planting cover crops, and general farm maintenance. Our bi-weekly harvest days were the most rewarding. Slowly watching the crops come in and out of season and reaping the benefits our labor made the hard work pay off. Additionally, I now feel established in the greater Birdsfoot community, and have made connections that will last a lifetime. Through these connections, I have made a second home at Birdsfoot, and the relationships I have made present job opportunities in fields that I am most passionate about for the near future.
