Marika Stauring ’24 is a double major in Anthropology and Geology, interested specifically in bioarchaeology and studying environmental disasters.

In addition to making the Dean’s List each semester, in the spring 2021 semester she received Honorable Mention in the William O’Brien First-Year Research Prize for her project entitled “Touch Starvation, COVID-19, and Pets: An Exploration of Supplementary Biological Interaction in Isolation” and was a recipient of the Richard J. Perry Award for academic excellence in Anthropology in 2022.  After assisting Dr. Mindy Pitre with bioarchaeological research on remains discovered in the town of Heuvelton, New York, in 2022, she prepared a presentation to be shared at St. Lawrence’s Festival of Science.

During the summer of 2022, she participated in a bioarcheological field school run by the University of New Brunswick at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada, under the supervision of Dr. Amy Scott. 

In the 2022-2023 academic year, she was a St. Lawrence County Rock and Mineral Club Scholarship Recipient, and was inducted into the St. Lawrence University chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon; the geology honor society, as well as the IOTA Chapter of Lambda Alpha; the anthropology honor society. 

She is has taken coursework and is interested in pursing a career in GIS, as well as experiential opportunities that will prepare her for alternative career paths that fall within her fields of interest.
