This summer I was given the opportunity to intern at the Clayton Dental Office in Clayton, New York. I have always wanted to occupy a profession in the medical field, and this gave me that chance. Over the course of the internship, I knew that dentistry was the perfect profession for me, willing me to take the Dental Admission Test and begin apply to dental schools.
This internship program was crucial in my development as a person and aspiring dentist. Many interns who went through with this program went on to become very successful dentists, with many still practicing in this area. Access to healthcare in this area can be limited, so programs like this play an important role in expanding care and improving access for the local community. Some of the main focal points of this internship were gaining hands on experience in the clinical setting, improving communication with patients, and learning how a successful practice should run. All of these goals vastly improved my skill over the summer.
From late May to early August I shadowed five separate dentists, between two different offices. The opportunity to see how different people handle situations was eye-opening, teaching me that there are many different skillsets involved in dentistry. I will be forever grateful to St. Lawrence University and this internship program, as it allowed me to find a career I love in Upstate New York.
