This summer, I had the opportunity to work alongside various dentists at Clayton Dental Office in Clayton, New York. I have dreamed of being a dentist since I was a young girl, and this internship helped me solidify this dream, propelling me to take the Dental Admissions Test at the end of the summer.
This internship experience in particular drew me in because of the high rate of interns who went on to pursue dental school, many of them being students from this area. Additionally, this internship focuses on many different aspects of dentistry, including administrative work, learning in modules with note taking, and dental assisting. Being from a small town in rural New York, resources are not always plentiful, so this internship has been of high value for both my dental education, as well as my understanding of hands-on dental procedures and administrative tasks associated with managing an office.
From late May to early August, I worked in Clayton Dental Office, with an externship to Black River Dental Office, resulting in my shadowing and dental assisting of five different dentists of varying age. This was incredibly beneficial, as it provided me with a well-rounded perception of what dentistry can look like, particularly with specializations (such as orthodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery), that otherwise would've escaped me. This experience eased all doubts that I had about dentistry, and made me 100% certain that this is the field for me! I am incredibly grateful.
