Semester:
Summer 2024
Description

Muddy Creek Animal Care Center located in Rowley MA is a veterinary hospital with kennel, daycare and grooming facilities attached. Over the years my pets have been treated there for everything from annual appointments, to vaccines, and sick visits. The facility has exceptional doctors, technicians, and kennel/daycare staff. This summer I was lucky enough to spend time shadowing and working in the hospital area of Muddy Creek.

Throughout my internship I worked to gain the skills required to be a Veterinary Technician as well as spent time shadowing doctors during appointments. While my intention is to eventually become a DVM (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine) it is vastly important for me to understand not only the work of a doctor, but learn technician skills that will not be explicitly taught during vet school.

The technician staff at Muddy Creek and specifically my mentor Sherry Peterson took the time to show me the ropes of day-to-day technician work. I learned how to insert an IV catheter, draw blood from the cephalic and saphenous veins, intubate, speak with clients, record a pet’s history, restrain pets for procedures, do an ear cytology and so much more. I will be forever grateful for all that I learned.

When the technicians did not need my help, I spent time shadowing doctors during appointments. I learned the steps each vet follows when assessing a pet during a physical exam and studied the way each vet handled emergencies as well their course of treatment for sick patients.

My time at Muddy Creek confirmed my love for veterinary medicine. I cannot thank the technicians and doctors enough for their mentorship this summer and I am looking forward to using these skills when I apply for a paid position as a veterinary assistant and throughout my endeavors to become a DVM.
