"Neijuan (involution)" is a popular word in China today, and it is also a social phenomenon among the modern younger generation. The word "involution" was originally used in the field of anthropology, but now it has gradually become a frequently mentioned word in the daily life of Chinese society. In Chinese society, the younger generation is even called the "involution generation". By conducting interviews, online research, and a literature review, the project studies the phenomenon of involution, including the definition of involution, why it occurs in the field of education, and what impact it has brought to the younger generation.
First of all, the "stability" in China's traditional values has caused people's demand for spiritual stability (internal stability) and material and economic stability (external stability). However, the common view in Chinese society holds that getting high scores in the college entrance examination and entering a good university is the foundation for achieving both internal stability and external stability. However, with the popularization of higher education and the relative saturation of the labor market, the cost for people to achieve "stability" is getting more difficult, which not only requires students to have excellent strength to get high scores, but also requires support from family backgrounds to provide various resources. By conducting interviews with senior year high school students and their parents and teachers, and senior college students, it is precise because of the pursuit of "stability" that the phenomenon of "involution" occurs, which makes the competition crueler: the scores of college entrance examination are increasing year by year and the threshold (academic degree) for getting a job is becoming more stringent. The crazy "involution" phenomenon has caused the occurrence of students' mental health issues, as well as the phenomenon of "academic degree depreciation" that students face when they look for jobs after graduation and the gap between their interests and job when they work.
