Over the summer of 2025, I took the opportunity to travel down to Charleston, South Carolina in order to hone my basketball coaching abilities. In a full circle moment, I worked with my mentor and former trainer Chris Evans. He is currently the varsity girls coach at Porter-Gaud High School and the director of Team Lead, a new AAU program in the Charleston area.
My internship was a multi-faceted program that takes young, aspiring coaches and gives them the experiences essential to be successful in this field. Some of the tasks included working as an on-court assistant for practices, games, private training and youth camps. It also included organizing the teams and members of the team during tournaments, helping create practice plans, and making digital content that was used across various social media platforms
In order to maximize my efforts, I made three goals for myself and can confidently say I achieved each of them. My first goal was to develop my skills as a basketball trainer, specifically learning new strategies and ways to improve the players that I work with. My second goal was to learn how to build up social media accounts with insightful and entertaining basketball content. My final goal was to strengthen my ability to confidently and clearly coach in a variety of environments.
I had an incredible experience over those ten weeks and am extremely appreciative of Dan and Kiki Mahar as well as the Endowed Internship Fund. They were a huge help in my journey and I am grateful for their generosity.
