This summer I had the opportunity to work as an intern for a small mediation company, Greater Boston Mediation. I spent my time learning about the companies financials, and all it takes to run a small business. I was able to gain lots of experience working with Microsoft Excel, and produce forms that were used directly with clients. I also had the chance to learn about profit/loss reports, clients financial statements, and the asset division process which comes with divorce. Greater Boston Mediation focuses on saving clients the costs of going through a judge, and aims to please both clients, by making their divorce as pain-free as possible. It was beneficial for me to focus on the financial, and business side to the company, while also learning a little bit about the law, and how divorces work. I helped develop separation agreements, label them, and ship them out to clients. I also had the opportunity to look at the marketing side to the company, and help edit websites, and other online information. The most beneficial part for me was learning how to develop asset division templates on excel, in order to split up their IRAs, houses, cars, etc. After developing a working template, I could view client's financial statements, and use my template to effectively break up their assets, and debts. As a close to the internship, I took a trip into the probate court for some closure on the work I had been doing. I was able to see exactly what the clients were doing with the paperwork they were sent, and how mediation makes the process easier for them.
