Semester:
Summer 2024
Description

This summer, I interned at the Malagasy Institute of Applicated Research (IMRA) where my role was to assist and expand my laboratory skills with several ongoing projects that the Institute takes care of. During these 8 weeks, along with Professors, chemists, botanists, biologists, and all sorts of Malagasy scientists, I had the opportunity to acquire relevant skills that delve into the investigation of medicinal plants in Madagascar.

Throughout, I was assigned to multiple labs such as Pharmacology, Phytochemistry, and Biochemistry, and I explored different roles and techniques mostly focused on molecule extractions and isolation from plants available as well as endemic in Madagascar.

One major focus of my internship was to investigate the benefits of the plant known as Centella Asiatica. Centella Asiatica is one of the emblematic plants of the rich flora of Madagascar and is known to show multiple promises in treating a different range of diseases. It is currently recognized to have its most efficient form in Madagascar and IMRA has used several extracts of this plant in producing phytomedicines against several diseases ranging from common flu to liver-related conditions. While the lack of equipment does not permit the Institute to deepen its study of the plant, the use of these medicines has shown positive outcomes for the population.

Another project that I was appointed to was to focus on the antioxidant effects of plants. The antioxidant property is a useful outcome of certain plants or fruits that have preventive effects on serious illnesses. Thus, along with technicians and lab assistants, I have had the opportunity to run multiple types of antioxidant screenings in several plants, while investigating on other promising ones.

Ultimately, I am very grateful to have collaborated with multiple scientists.  These 8 weeks have taught me how to apply an effective team communication in the laboratory while executing tasks effectively. I am truly grateful for this experience and hope to expand this investigation further in the future.
