In the summer of 2026 I was a SLU PIC intern for the St. Lawrence County Land Trust. I started with joining my supervisor, Carol Cady, at the Indian Creek Nature Center helping lead Birding Walks with local middle school students. Another event I attended was the Thousand Island's Land Trust's Community Picnic at their Zenda Farms. I tabled with Dan Bellinger, the Treasurer, and had a great evening meeting new people and learning so much.
The biggest part of my internship was attending the local farmers markets. I tabled in Canton every Friday, then a few Thursdays in Gouverneur, and a couple Saturdays in Potsdam. I met and talked with everyday people about conservation and the Land Trust’s role in helping St. Lawrence County land owners conserve their land. I also encouraged people to visit Hart's Falls, a property owned by the Land Trust.
Other tasks included designing materials to be included at the tabling events, digitizing the Hart's Falls sign in sheets from past years, and creating an Intern Handbook.
My key take away from this opportunity is it perfectly aligned with my passion for helping people learn what they can do to protect the environment. This has helped me define my career goals and determining what comes after SLU!
