During my internship at SHOFCO Mathare, I had the opportunity to work in various departments including antenatal care, child welfare, nutrition, family planning, social work, and the comprehensive care clinic. This hands-on experience allowed me to develop important clinical skills such as monitoring vital signs, supporting immunization programs, and participating in health education sessions.
I also gained valuable skills in community engagement by working directly with patients, including participating in support groups for teenage mothers. Learning about SHOFCO’s data management systems broadened my understanding of how data supports effective healthcare delivery.
Beyond technical skills, this internship taught me the importance of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and clear communication in public health. I learned how delivering care with warmth and respect can make a significant difference in resource-limited settings. This experience has strengthened my passion for public health and deepened my commitment to serving communities facing health challenges.
I am truly grateful for the support that made this opportunity possible and for the chance to learn from both the SHOFCO team and the vibrant community of Mathare.
