In the summer of 2026, Ashlyn examined how environmental conditions influence sediment composition in windward and leeward lagoonal environments of Ambergris Caye, Belize. Carbonate sediments are highly sensitive to environmental energy, water depth, and circulation patterns. This research examined the spatial distribution of carbonate sediments to provide insight into lagoonal processes and how these environments respond to environmental change over time.
The samples analyzed during this project were collected during a St. Lawrence University field course in 2023.
Samples were analyzed through granulometric analysis, petrographic examination, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mapping. Petrographic examination was used to determine non-skeletal grains and skeletal grains include Halimeda, echinoderms, red algae, corals, and Foraminifera. Granulometric analysis was determined through the use of a sieve nest and mechanical shaker to determine grain-size distributions. XRD analysis was conducted at Union College to identify major carbonate minerals, including calcite and aragonite.
Through this research experience, Ashlyn developed skills in carbonate sediment analysis, granulometric analysis, petrographic examination, and mineral identification. The final product of this research will be a poster presentation at a Geological Society of America meeting.
This experience provided essential research training and helped prepare Ashlyn for future graduate study.
